A positive note for Houston’s economy came Friday when sales tax revenue showed an increase from the same period a year ago.

The Missouri Department of Revenue reported that revenue from a one-cent sales tax totaled $55,017, which is an increase of $2,273 or about 4.3 percent.

Local merchants also collect two quarter-cent sales taxes that are used for street and sidewalk improvements, as well as utility needs. Each contributed about $13,364, which was up about $436 each from a year ago.

An eighth-cent sales tax netted $6,682 for retirement of debt on a new fire truck.

Houston’s report bucked a county-wide trend that showed total sales tax collections dropping.
