Scheets helps Tigers get back on track

Ty Scheets’ biggest game of the season helped the Houston Tigers earn a victory they desperately needed with district play less than a week away.

Scheets scored a season-best 23 points and Kyle Poynter had 21 as the Tigers pulled away for a 64-44 victory Tuesday against Seymour at Hiett Gymnasium.

It was a much-needed win for the Tigers, who were thumped 63-38 Friday night at Willow Springs and lost the previous night 55-44 at Mansfield. Houston faces the Bears in Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 3 District 10 tournament.

“We’ve gone through a real tough stretch,” Tigers coach Brent Hall said. “It was good to see everyone play together.”

Scheets scored the game’s first six points and the Tigers led 15-9 early. But foul trouble kept Houston (11-14) from extending its lead, and Seymour only trailed by five at the half.

Hall credited several JV players with keeping the Tigers’ lead while his starters were forced to the bench with multiple fouls.

“We went all the way down the bench to Curry Van Horn and Cory Scheets. Those kids held the fort down until the half. It was a big difference,” Hall said.

The Tigers outscored Seymour 41-26 in the second half.

On Friday, Willow Springs outscored the Tigers 19-7 in the third quarter to break open a three-point game.

Poynter had 11 of Houston’s 15 field goals and scored 28. Scheets was the next-highest scorer with four points.

The previous night at Mansfield, Poynter scored 22 and Jesse Setters had 10 in the Tigers’ 11-point loss.
