Five Houston players were named to the all-SCA basketball team last week, highlighted by first team honors for Kyle Poynter and Holly Thomas.
Kendra Welch was a second-team selection, and Ty Scheets and Erica Keeney received honorable mention honors.
Poynter, a junior guard who transferred from Lebanon, averaged 23.6 points per game en route to easily setting the program’s single-season scoring record. His 613 points surpassed the previous mark of 529 set by Brian Powell during the 1995-’96 season.
Poynter, who missed three games and was held to a season-low four points in the district semifinals after injuring his ankle, reached double digits in all but his final game. He shot 53.6 percent from the field and led the Tigers in rebounding (8.2), assists (1.5) and blocked shots (1.3).
Thomas nearly averaged a double-double her senior season for the Lady Tigers. She led the team in scoring (14.7), rebounding (9.3) and blocked shots (1.4) to earn first-team honors for the second consecutive season.
Welch, a senior point guard, averaged 9.5 points per game while leading the Lady Tigers in 3-pointers (33), assists (3.1) and steals (3.9).
Scheets was second on the team with 8.6 points per game on 58-percent shooting. He also averaged 6.9 rebounds per game for the Tigers.
Keeney, a sophomore forward, averaged 9.4 points and 8.6 rebounds for the lady Tigers. She shot a team-best 58 percent from the field.
