Charles Robert Dewey, 87, died March 27, 2009, in Willow Health Care Facility, Willow Springs.
He was born March 13, 1922, in Cumberland, Wisc., to Delos and Edna Susan Whitcomb Dewey.
He was raised at Cumberland, where her graduated from high school and later attended college. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in World War II while stationed in New Guinea. He received several decorations: Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a corporal.
He married Eunice Irene Durand on Oct. 14, 1942. She died in March 2008. They owned a printing shop in Fremont, Neb.
He enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, hunting, playing cards and bowling. He and his wife enjoyed traveling. They visited Ireland, England, Scotland, China, Germany and Australia. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Houston, and Kiwanis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a son, Hugh Patrick Dewey.
Surviving are three sons, Martin, Houston; Ed, Lake Villa, Ill., and Patrick, Longmont, Colo.; one daughter, Eileen Warner, Houston; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were March 31, 2009, at Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Steelman officiating and full military honors provided. Cremation was under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
