Houston players, from left, J.R. Knetzer, Kyle Poynter and Caleb Smith celebrate the Tigers' 1-0 district semifinal victory Monday against Logan-Rogersville.

AVA – Kyle Poynter saved his best game for the Tigers’ biggest game of the season.

Poynter threw a complete-game shutout, and Houston scored a single unearned run to squeak past Logan-Rogersville 1-0 Monday evening in the semifinals of the Class 3 District 10 tournament.

The Tigers will face top-seeded Ava at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Bears defeated Mountain Grove 5-4 in Monday’s other semifinal.

Poynter, the team’s staff ace, improved to 6-1 with a dominating effort. He fanned 10 batters and allowed just two hits.

Poynter was only in trouble once when No. 7 hitter Korey Holiday tripled with one out. But Poynter ended the threat with a strikeout and flyball to right.

Houston scored the game’s only run in the top of the second. With one out, Eli Smith reached on an error and moved to third base on J.R. Knetzer’s single. Smith scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers had just three hits – singles by Poynter, Knetzer and Jacob Case.
