Fireworks will light the sky in Houston on Friday.

A Houston organization will sponsor a fireworks show and other activities Friday at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63.

The Animal Shelter of Texas County is organizing the event.

Activities begin at 6 p.m. with the opening of a carnival midway operated by Southern Fun Carnival. The Marshall Law Band will perform from 6 to 7 p.m. A prayer, pledge and performance of the National Anthem are planned beginning at 7 p.m. A flyover by an Air Evac helicopter begins at 7:10 p.m. Five minutes later, a parachute drop and presentation of the flag occurs.

Kenny Presley and Band, performing a tribute to Elvis Presley, are on stage from 7:35 to 9:35 p.m.

A fireworks show, choreographed to music, runs from 9:35 to 10:05 p.m.

There will be a $5 per vehicle parking fee. Two coupons for soft drinks, courtesy of Pepsi, will be presented to each parked vehicle and can be redeemed at the animal shelter’s cook shack. Food will be served by the Texas County Cattlemen’s organization.

Southern Fun Carnival will operate today (Thursday) through Saturday. Armbands are on sale at Romines Motor Co. Inc. in Houston. The cost is $13. The price on the grounds is $20.

The Animal Shelter of Texas County said much of the activities are free because of the generosity of area merchants who donated funds.

Anita Kennedy of the animal shelter said the organization has been helped by so many in the area and this a way to give back to the community and celebrate America.
