An inmate at the South Central Corrections Center was found guilty Monday of assaulting a prison guard.

Leonard Elliott, who is serving a life sentence for a 2002 murder in Phelps County, was convicted in just one day inside the Texas County Justice Center. He was charged with committing violence against an employee of the department of corrections.

Texas County Prosecutor Mike Anderson said it was a rarity for a felony jury trial to last one day.

“I think this might be some kind of record,” Anderson said. “But the evidence was very compelling, and it did not take the jury long to reach their decision.

Anderson said the case was a serious one.

“The inmates have to understand that violence against guards and other employees won’t be tolerated,” he said.
