John J. Bandy, 82, died Friday, July 3, 2009, at Birch View Health Center.

He was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Summersville, son of John W. Bandy and Nora Victoria Bates. He and Gladys Adelia Walsh were married Sept. 5, 1970. She died Nov. 5, 1978.

He was baptized about five years ago and was an active member of the Church of Christ in Summersville. He did clerical work and was a chief cook in the Army from 1945 until 1952.

After leaving the military, he spent several years selling cars and mobile homes in St. Louis. He met his wife while working in Illinois and lived in Moline, where he worked in found ary.

Following his wife’s death, he moved to Mountain View and worked at AMPI cheese factory until it closed. He then worked at Richard Brothers before retiring a third time and moving to his hometown of Summersville, where he worked at South Central Manufacturing Corporation until he became ill about one year ago.

He enjoyed sharing a cup of coffee, sweet treat and story or song at local businesses or with family and friends. He was known for making encouraging visits and calls, and he often shared special gifts with his sisters, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Gladys; four brothers, James Floyd, Rado Clarence, Orville Eugene and William Anthony; and three sisters, Mildred Pearl Sullins, Cecile Jewel Robison and Mabel Irene Sloan.

Survivors include five sisters, Bessie Mae Terrill, Alene Fleener, Muriel Gregory, Grace Bandy and Mary Lou Beasley; and several nieces, nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Services were Tuesday, July 7, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bill Cooper officiating. Burial was in Summersville City Cemetery.
