Tom Durkin explains the Sunshine Law during a seminar in Houston this week. The class was organized by the Missouri attorney general's office.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster’s office held a Sunshine Law workshop Monday at the Texas County Justice Center.

The one-hour class was conducted by Tom Durkin, public education director for Koster’s office.

Koster said last week that the workshop is an effort by his office to provide government officials with the support they need to be well informed in conducting their business in a way that brings transparency and fairness to all aspects of government.

Among the topics presented:

-Who does the law apply to?

-What is a public meeting? What is a public record?

-Liberal construction of the law, as well as procedures and limitations for closing meetings and records.

-Appointment of a custodian of records and fees for copying public records.

A booklet on the law also is available by calling 573-751-8844 or online at ago.mo.gov.
