Bertha Willeta Shelton Murray, 86, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Houston House.

She was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Houston, daughter of Roy and Dorothy Coats Shelton. She and Marvin Terry Meadors were married Dec. 7, 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. She later married James Clark Proe and after his passing, she married Maurice Murray on May 24, 1968.

She graduated from Houston High School in 1941. She attended aeronautics school in Los Angeles, Calif., and built planes at the start of World War II. After three years, she returned to Texas County, where she worked at Rawlings for 36 years before retiring.

She loved to travel, tend to her flower and vegetable gardens and make quilts to give to family and friends.

Survivors include a sister, Bonnie Smith of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Karen Boren of Raymondville and Janice Stone of Licking; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Marvin Meadors, Clark Proe and Maurice Murray; and a brother, Vancil Shelton.

Services were Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Wesley Wallace officiating. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
