Melvin Oliver, 80, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Christian Health Care South Nursing Home in Lebanon.

He was born May 26, 1929, in Chatfield, Minn., son of Melvin and Edith Vollette Oliver. He and Inge Heil were married Feb. 17, 1954, in Fulda, Germany.

He joined the Army on Oct. 21, 1948, and served 24 years. He retired Oct. 31, 1972, as a staff sergeant.

He made his home with his wife in Evening Shade, where they lived 37 years. He enjoyed working on cars, horseshoes, bowling and eating home cooking.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; and a son, Larry Oliver.

Survivors include his wife, Inge of the home; four children, Jeanette Ramik of Taylor, Mich., Jimmy Oliver of Evening Shade and Peggy Saylors and Terry Rose of Bentonville, Ark.; five great-grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at Palace Church with Brock Davis officiating. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Services are under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
