Fred “Freddie” S. Hollenbeck, 83, son of Freddie Sanford Hollenbeck and Hortis Oscar Wheeler Hollenbeck, was born May 19, 1926, at the family home on Roubidoux Creek. He passed away December 5, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo., from a massive stroke.
Freddie was preceded in death by his first wife, Velma Berniece Altis Hollenbeck (mother of their four daughters); his parents; and siblings, Val Jean Hollenbeck Messick Rice, Carl Edward Hollenbeck and Carolyn Joyce Hollenbeck Booker. He married Roma LaNelle Hubbard Ross of Houston, Mo., on March 26, 1983.
Freddie was a lifetime resident of the Roubidoux area with the exception of a brief family residency in West Plains, Mo., and in service for his country. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and U.S. Army veteran, having served in WWII and Korea as a heavy equipment operator.
He accepted Christ as his Savior as a young man and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Houston, Mo., until his health declined. Previously, Freddie was a member of the Bucyrus Baptist Church and Roby Baptist Church, where he sang in their respective choirs. He also served in numerous capacities, including the church treasurer, singing in the church quartet and teaching nursery children.
He attended Plato High School for three years, followed by his senior year at Houston High School, where he served as president of the FFA chapter in 1945.
He is survived by his wife, Roma of the home in Bucyrus, Mo.; four daughters, Susan Elaine Hollenbeck Russell and husband, Robert Harris Russell, of Kansas City, Mo., Karen Jean Hollenbeck Smith and her husband, Rubert Sutton Smith, of Solo, Mo., Carla Kay Hollenbeck Taylor and husband, Dr. B.C. Taylor, of Houston, Mo., and Kathy Colene Hollenbeck and long term companion, Michael Patrick Mitchell, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; three stepchildren, Bruce Alan Ross of Liberty, Mo., Leslie Anne Ross Barnes and her husband, Bryan N. Barnes, of Columbia, Mo., and Diane LaNae Ross Perry of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren, Chad Rubert Smith, Jared Brock Smith, Suzanne Nicole Russell, Robert Grant Russell and Logan Kyle Taylor; four step-grandchildren, Amanda Kay Haney Harris, David Alan Ross, Emily Kathryn Perry and Taylor Morgan Perry; and four great-grandchildren, Shelby Lauren Smith, Hayden Sutton Smith, Cody Cheyenne Smith and Cali Jo Smith.
Freddie operated Hollenbeck Farms as a cattle rancher and dairy farmer, dealing in all aspects of managing a complete and productive farming operation. He enjoyed square dancing, hunting, gigging and waterskiing. He was also an avid horseman and maintained a herd of horses for pleasure and business. He attended cattle auctions, horse sales and trail rides with equal vigor and enjoyment.
Freddie never met a stranger and his greatest joy was in socializing with his many friends. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. However, as the immediate family often heard, “I am the dad dam boss!”
