The commanding general of Fort Leonard Wood announced last week that he will be leaving later this month for a new assignment in Kuwait.

Maj. Gen. Gregg Martin, who has served as Fort Leonard Wood’s commander since October 2008, said that on Jan. 27 he will become the deputy commanding general of the Third Army, U.S. Army Central Coalition Forces Land Component Command.

According to Martin, “This move is necessitated by the Army’s efforts to build up U.S. forces in Afghanistan, and draw down the U.S. presence in Iraq.”

A change of command ceremony for the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence (MSCoE) and Fort Leonard Wood will be later this month. Details will be announced as information becomes available.

Brig. Gen. David Phillips, commandant of the U.S. Army Military

Police School and Regiment, will be the commanding general of the installation until Martin’s replacement is named by the Army.

During his tenure at Fort Leonard Wood, Martin led with the philosophy of people first, mission always. Most recently, Martin was recognized for his influence in defending America by building the best possible people – soldiers, leaders, joint warriors, civilians and families – strong of mind, body, heart and spirit.
