Velma Riley

Velma (Robertson) Riley, 85, oldest daughter of Luther and Osie (Collins) Robertson, was born March 24, 1924, in Alice, Mo. She passed away Jan. 22, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Robertson; a sister-in-law, Lucille (McCall) Robertson; and three husbands, James Boulware, Charles Musgrave and George R. Riley.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Chapman and husband, Terry, of Nixa, Mo.; one grandson, Spc. Tom Chapman and wife, Erica, of Lebanon, Mo.; one granddaughter, Tammy Thompson and husband, Spc. Jason, of Ft. Riley, Kan.; one great-granddaughter, Addison Delaney Chapman of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Ida Walker and husband, Melvin, of Houston, Mo., and Alice Kelley and husband Lee of Cabool, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Velma grew up at Alice, Mo. She attended the Alice school through the eighth grade. Velma worked at Brown’s Shoe factory. In 1965, she moved to Springfield, Mo., and worked at Hagle Garment Factory, then retired from Zenith in 1985. After retirement she moved to Houston, Mo., where she called home till she became ill.

Velma loved her family and working with her hands, whether it was in the dirt raising a garden, tending to her flowers or sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed gatherings of the XYZ and OWLS with her friends.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Evans Funeral Home with Sandy Chapman officiating. Pallbearers were Darrin Walker, Danny Walker, Gerald Robertson, Gale Robertson, Sam Kelley and Dale Uhrig. Burial was in Rock Springs Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
