A Houston sporting destination is under new ownership this week.
Clydie Jr. “Bud” and Linda Evans of Houston acquired Oakwood Golf and Recreation east of Houston. The 68-acre property was purchased from Gordon and Carolyn Ziegler of Washington, Mo., who have operated the course since 1991.
The news comes after years of uncertainty about the nine-hole course’s operation. In 2007, the Zieglers announced they planned to close the business in the face of not finding a buyer. Local residents rallied and managed to keep it alive.
The golf course relocated from near the Houston Memorial Airport as part of a proposed improvement of that facility. Work began at the new location in 1985.
With the Evans’ purchase, local ownership of the business returns. Bud Evans said Monday afternoon that his entity, Evans Sports Management LLC, will work to make the venue family friendly and host receptions, parties and other social gathering at the club house.
An organization meeting for golfers is 6 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse, which is located off Highway B.
