The Houston Lady Tigers built a big enough lead to hang onto their first road victory of the season.
Danielle Pounds scored a season-high 21 points and the Lady Tigers, who led by 15 midway through the fourth quarter, squeaked out a 52-49 victory Monday at Liberty.
“It got a little scary. We did enough to hang on,” Houston coach Brent Kell said. “Had it been earlier in the season, I feel like we probably would have lost that ballgame.”
Erica Keeney had 12 points for the Lady Tigers. Pounds and Jessica Herndon each connected from downtown.
Houston (6-12), which hadn’t practiced since Thursday due to inclement weather, raced ahead 13-2 after the first quarter. The advantage was 13 entering the fourth quarter and stretched to 15 with about four minutes left in the game.
Liberty trimmed the deficit to two points with one minute left. But the Lady Tigers never relinquished their advantage.
JUNIOR VARSITY: Amber Sillyman scored a team-best seven points in the JV Lady Tigers’ 22-15 loss Monday to Liberty.
The game was only two quarters.
