A benefit March 13 will aid with the mission of The Animal Shelter of Texas County.

The event – The Lucky Dog – Cool Cat Gala – is 6 p.m. at the community building at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63. Organizers encourage those attending to get their tickets soon. The cost is $50 per person. The night includes a meal catered by Gentry Residential Treatment at Cabool, musical entertainment by Renee Wood’s After Hours Big Band from West Plains and a chance at raffle prizes, including four $100 drawings, one $1,000 winner, a motorcycle and other prizes.

Tickets are available at Romines Motor Co. Inc., the Visitors’ Center of the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, Infinite Entertainment or Paws N Claws. They must be purchased in advance.

Proceeds from the night help with the operation of the shelter and its programs, including spay and neuter clinics. One is planned for dogs and another will soon be announced for cats.

In 2009, there were 424 pet adoptions at the shelter, which is operated east of Houston on East Highway 17. It costs about $5,000 monthly to run the shelter, which is overseen by a team of volunteers.
