Houston coach Brent Hall waves home Chris Mooney as he rounds third base.

Two games, two outstanding performances from the Houston Tigers’ aces.

Senior Kyle Poynter struck out 12 batters and allowed just four hits in seven strong innings to push the Tigers into the championship game of the SCA Tournament with a 5-0 victory Wednesday against Salem.

Houston (2-0) will face Liberty for the conference title at 2 p.m. Friday at Salem.

Poynter’s outing came just one day after Chris Mooney also struck out 12 batters and didn’t allow a run in a 4-0 opening-round victory against Mountain Grove.

Poynter and Mooney gave up 10 hits and struck out 24 combined batters in 14 shutout innings.

Eli Smith went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Houston. Right field Kodey Campbell had a pair of hits, and Mooney scored three times.

The Tigers, who were the visitors despite playing at home, scored twice in the top of the first inning. Lucas Cooperman led off with a wind-aided double, Mooney walked and Poynter reached on an error to load the bases. Smith singled home a run, and Ty Foster followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly.

Poynter walked and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, and Smith had a run-scoring double to make it 4-0.

Mooney walked and scored on an error in the sixth for the final run.

Poynter struck out at least one batter in every inning and didn’t walk a batter.
