Calls of stolen copper continue to be received in Texas County.

Texas County Sheriff Carl Watson warns citizens that air conditioner thefts may potentially be on the rise.

Watson said since a major earthquake in Chile — which produces 60 percent of the world’s copper — cost per pound will likely rise from $3 to more than $4. He said thieves will likely target air conditioner units for their copper.

Watson encouraged the public to secure AC units with cages, locks, alarm monitors, cameras, good lighting and any other method to prevent potential thefts.
