Sales taxes collected by Houston merchants took a recent dip, according to a monthly report from the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The tally from a one-cent sales tax was $48,883, which was a drop of $3,828 from the same period a year ago, the department said. In the first three months of the year, City of Houston government received $158,863, which is down about $8,394 – or about 5 percent.

Taxes collected for road and sidewalk work, utility extensions and debt repayment on a fire truck also showed similar declines.

The reports are considered a good barometer of economic activity.
