With two more conference victories, the Houston Tigers moved a step closer to winning the SCA regular-season title.

The Tigers, who won the preseason conference tournament, improved to 5-0 with a pair of SCA wins the past week. They blanked Cabool 5-0 on Monday and cruised past Liberty 9-0 last Thursday.

Houston, which finished second over the weekend at the Hartville Tournament, last won the regular-season SCA title in 2005.

Chris Mooney struck out 10 batters and gave up just two hits in his complete-game victory against the Bulldogs.

The Tigers (11-2) broke open a 1-0 game with four sixth-inning runs, highlighted by consecutive RBI singles from Eli Smith and Kaleb Poynter and a two-run single by Kenny Barton.

Smith was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Kyle Poynter had a double and scored twice.

On Thursday, Kyle Poynter homered twice and drove in six runs in Houston’s sixth shutout of the season.

Kyle Poynter had a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a grand slam in his next at-bat in the sixth.

Mooney and Kyle Poynter scored three times apiece.

On the mound, Kyle Poynter struck out nine in the complete-game win. He walked one.

At the Hartville Tournament, the Tigers beat Hartville 8-0 in Friday’s opening round.

Kodey Campbell struck out seven batters and scattered six hits in his first career varsity victory.

Lucas Cooperman and Kyle Poynter had two hits apiece for Houston, which got RBIs from six different players.

On Saturday morning, Kaleb Poynter was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles in a 4-2 victory against Norwood.

Cooperman, Smith and Kaleb Poynter each knocked in runs.

Cooperman gave up one hit in four innings to earn the victory. He struck out five. Kyle Poynter pitched a scoreless inning for the save.

Conway defeated the Tigers 13-3 Saturday night in the title game.
