William “Bill” L. Akers, 79, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 9, 1931, in Dent County, son of John Wesley Akers and Bessie E. Prater. He and Geraldine Atkisson were married Dec. 13, 1951.
He was self-employed in the timber industry and sawmill business until 1983. He loved to coon hunt, listen to bluegrass, gospel and country music, pull draft horses and farm. He enjoyed meeting people, playing pitch and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was known as “Papa Bill” and was a Christian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruby Wells; and two brothers, Ed and John Akers.
Survivors include six children, John L. Akers and Hazel A. Akers of Licking, Mary M. Glidewell of Bucyrus, David Akers and Herbert E. Akers of Raymondville and Nora M. Hamilton of Yukon; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom Akers of St. James and Ben Akers of Licking; a sister, Hazel Gerrard of New Bloomfield; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were Saturday, May 22, at Fox Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Everett Perkins officiating. Burial was in Licking Cemetery.
