Seniors Kyle Poynter and Bethany Korte were named the Houston High School players of the year last Thursday at the third annual HHS sports banquet inside Hiett Gym.
Rhonda Neal, owner of Neal’s Sporting Goods in downtown Houston, received the Larry Southern Award for her dedicated support of HHS athetics.
About 230 people attended the event, which was hosted by the Houston Tiger Booster Club.
Poynter, who received the honor for the second consecutive year, was the SCA player of the year in basketball and starting quarterback for the football team. He earned all-state honors in basketball and will likely do the same in baseball this year.
Korte was the SCA softball player of the year and is a multiple medalist for the track team. She anchored the 4×200 relay team that placed first at districts Saturday.
Poynter and Amber Honig received sportsmanship awards from the Missouri State High School Activities Association. They were nominated and selected by the school’s adminstrators and coaches.
Each team and athlete was recognized by their respective coaches. Individual honors and awards were also handed out.
