More than 800 bridges in Missouri will be improved or repaired in the next five years.

Contractor crews are continuing work to rehabilitate the bridge decks over the “twin bridges” on U.S. 63 over Bender and Arthur Creeks, just north of Houston.

Work on the structures began on May 3. Contractors with West Plains Bridge and Grading, LLC. of West Plains, who were awarded the contract in February, have 140 calendar days to complete the rehabilitation.

Both structures are undergoing work at once to minimize the impact to motorists and traffic flow. Traffic flow will be continue to be controlled with signal devices. Motorists should expect some delay and use caution when traveling through the area.

The bridge has been identified as one among 802 across the state with critical improvement needs. These will be repaired or replaced through the MoDOT Safe & Sound bridge improvement program.

A web page has been developed to house the latest information regarding the Safe & Sound program. To view the information, visit www.modot.org/southcentral and click on the Safe & Sound link. A complete listing of all bridges included in the program as well as a map that can help traffic navigate around closures are among the resources available.
