Dr. Dan Vandiver says the field has narrowed for a position as Houston High School principal.

The Houston School District last week paid about $905,000 in debt from funds accumulated for repayment of bonds.

Dr. Dan Vandiver, superintendent, made the announcement during Monday night’s board of education meeting.

The board also set the 2010 tax levy. The operating levy remains $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation. The debt service tax is 80 cents per $100 assessed valuation, which is four cents lower than allowed by law.

In other matters, members:

-Recognized Joe Montgomery, transportation director, who received the “Exemplary School Bus Maintenance Award” from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The award recognizes 15 years of at least 90 percent compliance in meeting safety standards. The district’s buses have received a 100 percent for several years in a row.

-Approved revised job descriptions for all district positions.

-Okayed the junior class’s request to hold prom in Springfield in the spring.

-Rehired Brandon Reed as the district technology assistant.

-Named Willie Walker as high school assistant boys’ basketball coach. He will continue to be the middle school boys’ basketball coach as well.
