Changes are in store for this year's Houston Alumni Association event.

Preparations are under way for the Houston Alumni Association’s annual fall event, which is Oct. 1-2 and will sport a new look that includes no Saturday banquet.

A mixer will run longer this year – from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Hiett Gymnasium. There is no charge, and donations will be accepted. Organizers said the change of venue will allow classes to have impromptu reunions in the afternoon. Additional class gatherings are planned for Saturday evening.

A short discussion break for those at the mixer is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Annual dues of $10 can be paid at the mixer or mailed. The increase pays for the cost of publishing the alumni newsletter.

The association’s bylaws were amended this year to allow the alumni homecoming to coincide with the Houston High School homecoming. Sometimes the two weren’t the same weekend. The association’s homecoming had been the first weekend in October.

On Friday, former Houston Educator Hall of Fame recipients will ride in the afternoon parade. No musical gala is planned so everyone can attend homecoming coronation and football game.

A breakfast is planned Saturday morning at the Houston Senior Center.

The association would like to gather opinions of all interested alumni about the changes in the weekend. Forms will be available at the mixer. Others can express them at P.O. Box 304, Houston, Mo. 65483 or e-mail

This year’s alumni association will include a longer mixer, butno Saturday night banquet.
