Houston freshman Taylor Franklin is tagged out as she attempts to score in the third inning of TuesdayÕs game against Thayer.

Houston softball coach Willy Walker was proud to see his young team play with poise after facing an early deficit.

Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first inning, the Lady Tigers tightened up defensively and did just enough offensively to defeat Thayer 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at Carter Field.

“Being a young group, they kept their composure well and overcame some adversity right from the beginning,” Walker said.

Belle Knarr had a pair of infield singles and scored twice for the Lady Tigers, who received hits from six different players. Taylor Franklin and Maddie Vandiver each had RBIs.

Junior Carmen Floyd gave up six hits in the victory. She walked three and struck out four.

The Lady Tigers (10-9, 3-2 SCA) scored single runs in the first and second innings to cut the deficit to 3-2. They were aided by four errors in the third as they scored four times to take a commanding 6-3 lead.

Knarr reached on a bunt single in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch for Houston’s final run.

Although the Lady Tigers scored in four different innings, they stranded seven runners on base.

“We haven’t had a problem getting people on base,” Walker said. “It’s when they get on base, someone has to do their job at the plate to get the runners in.”

Houston stranded 11 runners Friday in a 5-4 loss at Laquey.

Kayla Kelley, who doubled, and Vandiver had the team’s lone hits. Vandiver scored twice.

On Thursday, Ava scored five times in the third inning and cruised past the Lady Tigers 9-2.

Kelley tripled and knocked in a run for Houston. Franklin, Vandiver and Knarr had one hit apiece.

Ava had 11 hits against Floyd, who gave up seven earned runs in the loss. She struck out seven and walked three.

Trailing 2-0, the Lady Tigers got a single run in the first on Floyd’s groundout that scored Franklin, who led off with a double.

Ava scored seven unanswered runs, highlighted by the five-run third inning. The first five batters of the inning reached base and scored before Houston recorded an out.

Franklin reached on an error in the sixth and scored on Kelley’s groundout for the Lady Tigers’ other run.
