Extra traffic and poor weather conditions prompted MoDOT to issue a warning Wednesday.

With an increased volume of traffic expected due to the Thanksgiving holiday and wet conditions throughout most of the state, the Missouri Department of Transportation is asking motorists to drive with heightened awareness and caution.

For starters, drivers can find out what they’re up against by getting the latest road conditions from MoDOT’s online Traveler Information Map located at www.modot.org. Travelers can also call MoDOT’s toll-free number, 888-ASK-MODOT, to get road condition information. In addition, motorists can do their part to ensure a safe holiday weekend byfollowing these basic travel tips:

*Allow extra time for your trip.

*Buckle up.

*Obey the speed limit.

*Slow down if conditions warrant it.

*Avoid distractions, such as cell phone use.

*Make sure vehicle windows are cleared to ensure visibility.

*Use headlights.

*Increase following distance.

*Keep plenty of fuel in the tank and carry an emergency kit.

*Let someone know where you’re headed.

MoDOT crews will be monitoring roadways for freezing conditions and stand ready to act to return roadways to a safe and passable condition as soon as possible.
