Military veteran

Vance Richard Hutsell, 88, son of Richard and Nora (Klingensmith) Hutsell, was born June 26, 1922, in Graff, Mo. He passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at his home in Houston, MO surrounded by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Emaline (Boykin) Hutsell, who died April 20, 1988; his parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Wilber and Warren Hutsell; and a sister, Mabel Smith.

Vance is survived by three daughters, Vonna Sue Geisler and husband, Melvin, of Mountain Grove, Mo., Vancetta Lou Asselin and husband, Fred, of Houston, Mo., and Rita Kay Milam and husband, Dwight, of Bucyrus, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a lot of friends.

Vance grew up in Graff, Mo., where he attended school at the Crewse School to the eighth grade, and then in later years he graduated from agriculture school.

He entered the Army Air Force on Nov. 12, 1942, and was honorably discharged Sept. 24, 1945. He worked as an airplane and engine mechanic and received seven bronze stars for his campaigns, a good conduct medal and a distinguished unit badge.

Vance married Helen Emaline Boykin at Graff, Mo., on Dec. 15, 1941, and to this union three daughters were born. They had 47 wonderful years together before her death in 1988.

He worked for civil service at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., for 30 years before his retirement.

He was baptized at an early age at Union Chapel Church at Graff, Mo. He was a member of Crossroads of Faith Church north of Mountain Grove. Vance had great faith in the Lord.

Vance’s hobbies included fishing, working with wood, traveling and gardening. He had a lot of interest in bowling. He never bowled but liked to watch it. He also loved to visit. He was enjoyed by everyone who met him. Vance always had a story to tell and loved to laugh and hand out candy.

Vance will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Evans Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Crossroads of Faith Church, Mountain Grove, Mo., with Pastors Junior Hutsell and Jerry Ratterree officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Friendship Cemetery at Dawson, Mo. Pallbearers are Kiley Gilley, Janney Gilley, Christopher Swopes, Jason Swopes, Jimmy Mendenhall, Robbie Kahler and Randall Hyde. Services were under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
