Virgie L. Shelton

Virgie Lee Mayfield Shelton, 98, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 10, 1912, in Black Fork, Ark., daughter of John Samuel and Margaret Mahalia Sparks Mayfield. She and H.J. “Jack” Shelton were married in 1934.

She moved with her family to Eufala, Okla., as an infant and later to Texas County in 1919. She attended Ellis Prairie grade school and graduated from Houston High School in 1931.

She was a stay-at-home mom until her children entered high school. She then worked at Venable Grocery until her retirement.

Her interests included reading, gardening, music, her grandchildren and playing a harmonica for her relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack Shelton; two brothers, Arlis and Leroy Mayfield; a sister, Clara Hubbs; and a grandson.

Survivors include five children, Shirley Pittman of Success, Don Shelton of Wichita, Kan., Mary Baker of Houston, Roger Shelton of Climax Springs and Jean Catron of San Diego, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Ellis Prairie Baptist Church with Eugene Earp officiating. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Evans Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ellis Prairie Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
