Dr. Jay Gordon Crump

On Nov. 26, Dr. Jay Gordon Crump, 60, died peacefully at his home in Rolla after a brief illness. Dr. Crump was born Feb. 11, 1950, in Moberly, the son of Lucian Temple and Sarah Imogene Crump. On Aug. 19, 1978, he was joined in marriage to Lugene Rust of Houston, Mo.

After going to public schools in Kirksville, Jay attended Truman State University for his pre-osteopathic training, and while at Truman, he was the President of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. In 1976, he earned his degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Andrew T. Still University.

After practicing medicine briefly in the state of Washington, Dr. Crump moved to Rolla in 1981 and joined the staff of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, where he worked in the emergency room and eventually became the Medical Director of Emergency Services from 1984-2009. In 1997, he took a position as VP/Chief Medical Officer at PCRMC and held this position until the time of his death. His greatest passion was the emergency department that he watched grow from a five-bed facility to the current 25 private rooms that it is today.

Jay Crump is survived by his wife, Lugene; a son, Seth Gordon Crump of Rolla; a daughter, Lindsey Marie Crump of St. James; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Robinson of Columbia; a son-in-law, Josh Robinson; one grandson, Cooper Jay Robinson; a brother, Gail Bruce Crump of Warrensburg; his mother-in-law, Iva Rust of Houston; a brother and sister-in-law, Kirby and Tracey Rust of Atlanta, Ga.; three nieces, Ashley, Shelby and Haley Rust of Rogersville; and a sister-in-law, Rebecca Weideman Crump of Baton Rouge, La.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Gene Rust; and a brother, Gary Allen Crump of Baton Rouge.

A memorial service for Dr. Jay will be Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Oak Meadow Country Club in Rolla, Mo. This celebration will take place from 10 am to 2 pm with a tribute service at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations to Phelps County Regional Medical Center’s Foundation, The Jay Crump, DO, Medical Scholarship Fund.
