Houston native Jeff Gettys was named the scholar-athlete of the year Sunday at the University of Missouri football team’s annual banquet.
Gettys, a senior, is accustomed to receiving honors at the event. In 2007, he named the team’s walk-on player of the year. That same season he was named as a second team member of the academic all-Big 12 team.
One of 15 seniors for the Tigers, Gettys is a member of the winningest class in program history. The seniors have won 39 games in their careers after Saturday’s 35-7 romp of rival Kansas. They also secured the fourth 10-win victory in team history. Missouri is 10-2.
Gettys was scheduled to undergo knee surgery Wednesday to repair an ACL tear he suffered at Texas A&M. It’s the second straight year his season ended prematurely with a knee injury.
Despite the injuries, Gettys has enjoyed a memorable five-year journey in Columbia. The first player from Houston to play for the Tigers in three decades, he played in 40 career games and started on special teams. He graduated in May and with Mizzou headed to another bowl game, he will have five rings for his five seasons with the Tigers.
