John Thomas Young, 82, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 15, 1928, near Giltner, Neb., son of Fred and Ruth Robinett Young. He and Erma Lee were married in 1954.
At age 4, he moved with his family to Missouri. He attended grade school at Elk Creek and high school in Cabool. He began college at Missouri University and finished at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, receiving a degree in agriculture in 1957.
He served in the Army in the Korea Conflict and Japan. He worked at Cabool Producer’s Creamery and Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill. He was a mail carrier for 33 years between Cabool and Houston. He was a school bus driver 22 years for Cabool Schools. He was later a farmer with a limited number of cattle and some hay harvesting.
He enjoyed collecting coins, stamps, pens, and pencils. He took vacation trips in the southwest United States, Old Mexico, North Carolina, New England, Washington, D.C., Niagara Falls, Korea and Alaska.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in 60 Pluses church group and many gatherings for his high school class of 1945.
He became a Christian at a young age. He continued to attend church at Cabool Christian Church, where he served as deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Rose and Pauline Young.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Erma Lee; a daughter, Elizabeth Jones of Houston; a son, Tim Young of Licking; a grandson; a granddaughter; and many friends and cousins.
Services were Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Cabool Christian Church with Brother Bob Martin officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home.
