Devin Garrett scored 22 points to lead the Houston eighth grade boys’ basketball team past Ava 47-28 Tuesday night.

D.J. McNew had 12 points for the Tigers, who led 27-16 at the half and outscored the Bears in each quarter.

“As long as we stay out of foul trouble, we can give teams a hard time in the halfcourt,” Houston coach Willy Walker said. “I have some guards that are starting to play physical on defense. They are very quick and can give a ballhandler fits.”

SEVENTH BOYS: McNew scored 11 points and Skylur Malam added eight in the Houston seventh grade basketball team’s 43-17 win Tuesday against Ava.

Houston led 28-5 at the half as the Tigers improved to 6-1.

“I’m very proud of how hard the kids are playing for me,” Walker said. “It’s always fun for a coach to have kids that want to play man-to-man defense and really get after it.”
