Arvel Bray, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at woodland Manor Nursing Home in Springfield.
He was born June 21, 1919, in Plato, son of Jim and Nancy Smith Bray. He and Treva Bowlin were married July 12, 1945.
He served in the Army during World War II in the 79th division. He was awarded four bronze stars for his campaigns in Normandy, No France, Rhineland and central Europe. He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Oct. 3, 1945.
He was a member of the Plato Christian Church for more than 50 years.
He loved working in the garden and seeing things grow. He was a farmer most of his life. Fishing was a hobby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Treva; three brothers, Truel, Raymond and Leland; and a sister, Thelma.
Survivors include a daughter; Kathy Dunn of Rogersville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Cleta McGuire of Lebanon.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Plato Christian Church with Eugene Earp officiating. Visitation is 1 p.m. until the start of the service. Burial with full military honors will be in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
