One person was killed and three seriously injured Wednesday in an Evening Shade crash

A pregnant Plato woman was killed and three persons seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday on Highway 17, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Dead is Veronica P. Burke, 28, who was the driver of a northbound 2001 Lincoln Navigator on Highway AW at Evening Shade.

Investigators said a westbound 2002 Dodge truck driven by Gregory D. Williams, 53, of Plato, attempted to cross Highway AW from Evening Shade Road and failed to yield the right-of-way to Burke’s vehicle, striking the side.

The Navigator began sliding and traveled off the right side of the roadway, returned to the highway and overturned, coming to rest on its side. All of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle, officers said.

Members of the patrol and ambulance crews, assisted by Roby First Responders, aided victims. Medical helicopters were unavailable due to weather conditions following the 3:55 p.m. wreck.

Burke was taken to a Fort Leonard Wood hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m.

Also transported to the military hospital in serious condition were: Brandon S. Burke, 24; Robert J. Belmontes, 12; and Marissa J. Belmontes, 5. All reside at Plato. Williams was not injured, the patrol said.

The patrol’s major crash investigation team also responded to the scene.
