Houston freshman Devin Coulter scores over a Dixon defender in the first half Saturday.

With four minutes left in Saturday’s game against the 10th-ranked team in Class 3, the Houston Tigers were trailing by eight points. They eventually lost 102-79 to Dixon, but coach Dustin Kirkman thought it was a positive showing for his young team that started two freshmen and a sophomore.

“I was pleased with our effort,” Kirkman said. “We ran out of gas at the end.”

Curry Van Horn led the Tigers (2-8) with 24 points. Freshmen Devin Coulter and Aaron Cantrell scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Dixon’s Damon Burrow scored a game-high 31 points.

After falling behind 31-16 in the first quarter, Houston outscored Dixon 19-14 in the second to trail by 10 at the half. The deficit was eight points midway through the fourth.
