Robert Lee Martin Jr., 93, died Feb. 18, 2011, at Kabul Nursing Home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Cabool, son of Robert Lee and Rose Simmons Martin. He and Norma Velma Williams were married July 27, 1935. She died on Feb. 8, 2003. He and Bertha Marr Lawrence were married Nov. 8, 2003, in Republic.

He and his wife were merchants in Houston and Seymour until 1954, when they entered college at Southwest Baptist University. They graduated in 1957 from Southwest Missouri State at with an education degree and later received a master’s degree from Drury College in 1961.

He was a math teacher in Wichita, Kan., school system from 1956-’79. They retired and moved to Licking.

He served with the 4th Signal Battalion, 9th U.S. Army during WWII in Germany. He was discharged in 1946.

He was baptized at an early age and was a member of the Baptist church all his life.

He and his wife, Bertha, enjoyed traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Murrill and Laurence Martin; a twin sister, Betty; a sister, Mable; his first wife, Velma Martin; and a niece.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; two stepsons, Paul Lawrence of Branson and Gary Lawrence of Springfield; and several extended family members and friends.

Services were Tuesday, Feb. 22, at First Baptist Church of Licking with Pastors Robert Gifford and Rob Lilly officiating. Burial was in Licking Cemetery under the direction of Fox Funeral Home.
