A Houston church congregation will construct a 5,500 square foot building on Airport Road, leaders announced late last week.

The 110 foot by 50 foot structure south of Hawthorn Avenue is a big step for the Seventh-day Adventist Church congregation, which first started meeting in a small farm house on South Sam Houston Blvd. in 2001 after a former pastor led a church planning effort to locate a Seventh-day Adventist Church in the county.

A groundbreaking ceremony was Feb. 13 at the seven-acre site, which was recently extended city electrical service.

Paul Fulton of Salem is the contractor for the building, which includes a 2,500 square foot sanctuary that can seat about 125. Also included in the floor plan are three classrooms and fellowship hall. Plans for the building have been studied since 2008 when a committee was formed. The exterior of the building includes steel siding and a metal roof.

Construction is expected to take four to five months. The church is designed to allow for future expansion.

About 35 are members of the congregation. There are 16.3 million members globally.

Pastor is Dale Rosette.
