The Houston tennis team opened the 2011 season Tuesday with a 7-2 loss at Waynesville.

Austin Bathon won his singles match 8-5 and Randy Barker was victorious 8-3 to account for the Tigers’ points.

“I thought the kids played pretty well for their first match,” Houston coach John Jordan said. “This match showed us our strengths and weaknesses and the direction we need to go with our practices.”

Michael Shea, the team’s No. 1 singles player, lost his match 8-3. Michael Castleman and Samantha Jones were defeated 8-2 and Drake Bell lost 8-1.

Castleman and Bathon were defeated 8-5 in doubles play. Shea and Jones lost 8-2 and Barker and Bell were defeated 8-0.

“We haven’t spent a lot of time on doubles, and it showed,” Jordan said. “We have time to improve.”
