A ceremony is planned Monday, May 9, in Plato to mark the northwest Texas County community’s selection as the population center of the United States.

The event begins at 1 p.m.

More details about the program will be announced later.

Plato was named the United States’ center of population by the U.S. Census Bureau at a news conference in late March,

Director Robert M. Groves said the exact center is 2.7 miles northeast of Plato. Groves said a special marker would be erected at a Plato location. At the time, he said he looked forward to attending the event.
