Even after victories, Houston coach Brent Hall has challenged his team to play better. The Tigers responded with one of their best outings of the season.
Ethan Williamson and Devin Coulter drove in four runs apiece as Houston cruised past Liberty 12-2 Monday in five innings.
Hall said he was pleased with the way his team performed after a sloppy 4-2 victory Saturday against Norwood to conclude the Hartville Tournament.
“It’s a step in the right direction,” Hall said. “Even though we are a young team, by the middle of the season I expect us to clean up some of those things. I was pretty hard on them after the Norwood game, even though we won. We responded today.”
Williamson, Coulter and Kaleb Poynter had two hits apiece against Liberty. Lucas Cooperman scored three times.
Eli Smith improved to 3-3 with five strong innings. He scattered five hits, struck out seven, walked none and didn’t allow an earned run. He threw 79 percent of his pitches for strikes.
“He usually drops his elbow and hits a batter or two. He didn’t do that today,” Hall said. “That’s what we expect from Eli every time he goes out there. He has done it before.”
Houston (7-6, 3-2 SCA) won two of its three games over the weekend in the Hartville Tournament. The Tigers actually hosted the tournament due to field conditions in Hartville following inclement weather.
In Friday’s tournament opener, Cooperman, Smith and Quinton Alston had two hits apiece in an 11-4 win against Hartville.
Cooperman struck out 10 batters for his first victory of the season. He gave up four hits and three earned runs.
On Saturday morning, state-ranked Conway scored four runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings en route to an 8-1 win.
Houston managed just three hits.
In the consolation game against Norwood, freshman Aaron Cantrell struck out four batters and gave up two hits for hits first career victory.
Williamson, Coulter and Nathan McCarthy had two hits apiece.
On Thursday, Coulter’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh lifted Houston to an 11-10 victory against Thayer.
Williamson was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Coulter and McCarthy drove in three runs apiece.
