Amy McNew encourages her team from the sidelines during her stint as Houston High School head volleyball coach during 2010 season. McNew left HHS for Mountain Grove and last weekend guided the team to state.

Houston High School volleyball coach Amy McNew resigned Friday morning after one season as head coach.

McNew, who will accept the same position at Mountain Grove, declined to comment. She said it was a difficult decision.

Athletic director Brent Kell said Tuesday he has received about 10 applications for the vacancy. He said a few interviews had been conducted and more would follow.

“We have what we feel are three good candidates,” Kell said. “We don’t want to rush things, but at the same time we want to make a hire before school is out.”

McNew led Houston to a 16-14-2 record in her first and only season as head coach in 2010. The winning record snapped a string of three straight losing seasons for the program. McNew was previously an assistant for five seasons under Debbie James.

A Branson High School graduate, McNew was a four-year volleyball standout from 1990-’93 at Missouri State University. She was one of six athletes enshrined Feb. 6, 2010, into the MSU Hall of Fame.
