Two members of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission and the head of MoDOT will attend a meeting in West Plains Thursday to discuss a controversial plan that would close a district office in Willow Springs.

Commission Chairwoman Grace Nichols of St. Charles and Lloyd “Joe” Carmichael of Springfield are expected, along with Kevin Keith, the MoDOT director.

The meeting begins at 1 p.m. at West Plains City Hall. Seating is limited; reserves are recommended by calling John Bailey at 417-469-3111, Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce at 417-469-5519 or West Plains Chamber of Commerce, 417-256-4433.

The meeting is advance of a decision by the commission on whether to approve Keith’s plan to cut jobs, headquarters and equipment throughout the state. The MoDOT district office in Willow Springs is slated to close under the proposal, which had received blistering criticism. Texas County would fall in a district with offices in Sikeston.

State representatives, county commissioners, school superintendents, officials with the South Central Ozark Council of Governments and others have been invited.
