Skye Wade prepares to serve while playing for William Woods University.

Skye Wade is the new coach of her former rival school.

A 2006 Licking High School graduate, Wade was named the head volleyball coach at Houston High School on Monday.

Wade replaces Amy McNew, who resigned May 6 after one season as head coach. She accepted the same position at Mountain Grove.

Wade said she has already joked with her nephew, who is enrolled at Licking, about being a Houston Tiger.

“I’m excited to join the program,” she said. “Going from orange to red, it won’t be that difficult.”

Wade, who will teach middle school health and physical education, will also be the new assistant high school girls’ basketball coach. Jennifer McNiell, who held the position the previous two years, is moving out of the school district.

Houston athletic director Brent Kell said he remembers Wade’s competitiveness as a high school athlete. She was an all-state volleyball player and also played basketball and ran track at Licking.

“She was an intelligent player and great competitor,” Kell said. “She loved to be the one to take the game-winning shot or serve for the match.”

Wade played both volleyball and basketball at William Woods University in Fulton. She graduated in 2010.

Wade said she planned to meet with her new team as soon as possible.

“I am looking forward to learning from these girls and the girls learning from me,” she said.
