Military veteran

James “Jim” Earl Barton, 84, died Friday, June 17, 2011, at his home in St. Peters.

He was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Hartshorn, son of Charles Monroe and Vena Delpha Crabtree Barton. He and Merry “Billie” Pendland were married May 3, 1947.

He grew up in the Hartshorn and Summersville communities and attended school there. He and his wife moved to the St. Peters area shortly after their marriage and resided there until his death. He worked as a carpenter, building residential homes for more than 40 years.

He served in the Navy from March 21, 1945, to Aug. 20, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie; his parents; a son, Darell; four brothers, Virgil, Cecil, Ralph and Elmer; and three sisters, Marie Goetz, Mildred Cook and Ola Mae Harmon.

Survivors include five children, Doug Barton of St. Charles, Gary Barton of O’Fallon, Anita Smith of Salem, Robert Barton of the Lake of the Ozarks, Denis King of Moscow Mills; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma McKee of Summersville and June Stark of Ivanhoe, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Sunday, June 19, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Steelman officiating. Burial with full military honors was in Antioch Cemetery.
