Several Houston athletes earned medals this past weekend at the 25th annual Show-Me State Games.
Tanner Cantrell and Kolby Walker, both freshmen at Houston High School, were members of the 16-and-under baseball team that won the gold medal Sunday.
Karen Shelton and Carla Taylor teamed up to win gold in 40-54 women’s scratch doubles bowling. Shelton and Mattie Woods won gold in 40-54 women’s doubles.
Cantrell and Walker were members of the American Family Insurance baseball team, which topped Hannibal 5-4 in the championship game. The team included players from across southwest Missouri. Seven of the 11 players were 14. Only one was 16.
Coached by Jeff Schlesener of Rogersville, the team won 6-1 and 6-0 to reach the title game.
Multiple local bowlers took home Show-Me Games medals.
Gale Wright took silver in 40-54 men, while Scott Shelton earned bronze in 20-39 men’s singles. The two also teamed up for silver in 20-39 men’s doubles and bronze in 20-39 men’s scratch doubles.
Taylor finished second in women’s 40-54 singles. Taylor and Nikki Jones took bronze in 20-39 women’s doubles.
Final figures will not be known until late this week, but Director Ken Ash said while the number of teams dropped slightly from 473 last year to 461, many outdoor sports with on-site registration – such as track and field – reported increased turnouts.
Attendance should be around last year’s three-weekend total of 26,352. Ash cited three factors: a strong base of annual participants, more families bypassing vacations to follow the Games’ “Stay at Home, Play at Home” slogan and beautiful weather.
