Texas County sold four tracts of property Monday because the owners had not paid their taxes for three years.
Treasurer-Collector Tammy Cantrell said the property brought $12,800 on the steps of the Texas County Administrative Center on Grand Avenue.
Cantrell issues a “certificate of purchase” to those successful, but it can’t be redeemed for one year. Cantrell said 120 days before the year ends, the holder must make three attempts to notify the original owner and conduct a title search.
When the land tax sale began, Cantrell’s office has 212 tracts where taxes hadn’t been paid, and by Monday the list only included eight.
