Skye Carrasquillo’s first career victory came at the expense of her alma mater.
Carrasquillo guided the Houston volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-5 season-opening victory against rival Licking Tuesday night inside Hiett Gymnasium.
A 2006 Licking graduate, Carrasquillo said she hadn’t thought much about her first opponent until the match began.
“As soon as they announced the starting lineups, I realized I was a Houston Tiger and they were our rivals,” she said.
Houston (1-0) dominated long stretches of the match. The Lady Tigers raced ahead 19-5 in the opening set and had a commanding 19-3 advantage in the second.
“I give all the credit to the players,” Carrasquillo said. “I was very pleased with how they played. They brought everything we’ve been practicing and put it into the game.”
Alexa Ichord had a pair of aces as Houston stretched a 9-5 lead to a 19-5 advantage in the opening set. Licking cut the gap to 24-20 with a late surge before Houston closed out the game.
Haylee Kell served an ace and Desiree Venable had a pair of kills as the Lady Tigers went ahead 11-1 in the second set and were never threatened.
Houston won the JV match in three sets.
