William Thurman “W.T.” Sykes, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, in Summersville.
He was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Hartshorn, James Oscar Sykes and Gladys Steelman Sykes. He and Mable Marie Bradway were married May 29, 1950. She died in August 2008. He later married Evelyn Bryson Crane on Sept. 12, 2009.
He was a carpenter and built many homes in the area. He enjoyed gardening and giving his produce to others.
He accepted Christ in1976 and attended church until his health permitted otherwise. He helped with building Summersville Assembly of God, Midvale Church and others in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mable; a brother, Raymond Sykes; and four sisters, Ethel and Ileda Sykes, Bertha Ray and Alta Hogan.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sykes of the home in Summersville; two daughters, Sharon Odom and Rhonda Holden of Summersville; three sons, Gary Sykes of Winfield, Terry Sykes of Wentzville and Randy Sykes of West Plains; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leroy Sykes of Hillsboro; six sisters, Thelma Pitman, Ruby Bradway, Evelyn Richards Alton and Myrtle Young of Summersville, Mildred Pyatt of Salem and Juanita Orchard of Hillsboro; four stepchildren, Andree Havens, Raymond Crane, Billy Lee Crane and Howard Crane of the Summersville area; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
Services wereTuesday, Aug. 23, 2001 at Bradford Funeral Home with the Rev. Janet Jackson and the Rev. Gary Steelman officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery.
